Discussion Feedback |
|
Active
learning and frequent feedback are two crucial factors in student
success online. Online discussions meet these needs while allowing
students more control over their own grades than other collaborative
projects offer; other types of collaboration usually involve a
single grade for a group of students, whereas in a discussion,
although the student is interacting with student colleagues, the
grade is dependent only on the quality of his/her own contributions.

Desktop Alerts |
This
month's tip is about those little Desktop Alerts that pop up in the
lower right corner of your screen when a new message comes in. Many
people find these alerts handy, but they can also be annoying if,
for instance, you get a lot of spam, or if your monitor is being
projected on a big screen for your whole class to see. So here's
what you do to turn the alerts off:
- Click the Tools menu item, and then click
Options.
- The first tab in the Options window is
Preferences; that's the one you want. Click the
E-mail Options... button (near the top right of
the window.)
- Click the Advanced E-Mail Options... button.
- Under the "When new items arrive in my Inbox" section, remove
the checkmark from the "Display a New Mail Desktop Alert"
checkbox.
- Click OK in that window, and the other two windows to save
your changes and get back to Outlook.
If you find
that you miss the alerts, you can always go back in and put the
checkmark back in the checkbox. And you may also have noticed the
Desktop Alert Settings button under the checkbox.
You can click that button to change the duration of the alert and
even its transparency. |
