Distance Learning Options

Web-Based

After registering for a distance learning course, the student must read his receipt to find out when and in what room number his orientation will be held on the Niceville Campus. This is the start (Kick-Off) of the course.  The orientation date/time/room schedule will also be posted on the About Orientations page of our website several days before the day of orientation.  The orientation schedule will also be posted on the doors of most of the buildings on the Niceville campus the day of orientation.

A web-based distance learning course operates in this fashion:

  • The student must appear for orientation in order to receive instructions and course-related materials (student study guide) from the instructor.  If the student cannot appear at the scheduled day and time, he or she must contact the instructor to make other arrangements.
  • Most courses will require one or more textbooks.
  • Students are required to have a computer with internet access.  Most of the coursework (assignments, quizzes, and additional resources) will be conducted online using a program called Desire2Learn or D2l.
  • The student may be required to meet on campus for the midterm exam, although some exams are given online through D2L. If midterms are scheduled on campus and the student cannot appear at the scheduled date and time, he or she must contact the instructor to make other arrangements.
  • The student may be required to appear on campus for the scheduled final exam, although some exams are given online through D2L. If the final exam is scheduled on campus and the student cannot appear at the scheduled date and time, he or she must contact the instructor to make other arrangements.
  • Some instructors require students to take more exams beyond the midterm and final exams.  Several instructors have 4 – 6 exams scheduled online through D2L during the course of the semester.
